Meaning Of Constitution
The term Constitution comes from a Latin word CONSTITUTIO which means regulations or orders. Thus, a constitution is an aggregate of fundamental principles or established precedents that constitute the legal basis of a country, organisation or other type of entity and commonly determine how that entity is to be governed.

Constitutional History Of Ghana
Ghana had a series of Constitutions before independence. The first was the Clifford Constitution in 1916 followed by the Guggisberg Constitution in 1925. The Guggisberg Constitution was then replaced by the Allan Burns Constitution in 1946 constitution. The 1946 constitution was replaced by the 1954 Nkrumah constitution.
Our Modern Ghana, formally Gold Coast was the first Country in Sub – Saharan Africa to gain political independence from colonial rule in 1957. Following Ghana’s liberation from the British, a new Constitution was drafted to replace the 1946 Allan Burns Constitution.

The Constitution was popularly referred to as THE 1957 INDEPENDENCE CONSTITUTION OF GHANA. The 1957 Constitution was replaced by the 1960 Republican Constitution. The 1960 Constitution was also replaced in 1966 following a coup de tat which overthrew the Nkrumah Administration.
A new constitution was drafted in 1979 after a series of coup de tats. And finally, the current Constitution, the 1992 constitution was drafted.

The Constitution of Ghana is the supreme law of the Republic of Ghana. It was approved on 28 April 1992 through a national referendum after 92% support. It defines the fundamental political principles, establishing the structure, procedures, powers and duties of the government, structure of the judiciary and legislature, and spells out the fundamental rights and duties of citizens.
It is made up of 26 chapters, not including the preamble.
In part, the constitution was designed to decentralize the government in Ghana.
