This year’s African Cup of Nations, (AFCON) has been full of surprises as the giants of the game are being conquered by the underdogs and today’s match is no exception between Equatorial Guinea and Algeria.
The reigning champions, Algeria were defeated by Equatorial Guinea today in the ongoing AFCON as the two teams battled it out on Sunday evening.
The underrated team of this match came up high as they beat their opponents by a lone goal to gain the three maximum points.
Algeria, branded as part of the favourites in this tournament came into this game with the aim of beating the underrated opponents hands down since they drew in their first game against Sierra Leone, but unfortunately it did not go as they expected.
The reigning champions of Africa played very well, created some chances but could not fancy them and before they could say jack, Equatorial Guinea put a goal at the back of the net from a set piece.
As it stands now, Algeria lies bottom on their group table because they lost their match today.
Their next match is a tough one against the elephants of La Cote D’ivoire and failure to win that match indicates that Algeria would be kicked out of the competition at the early stages.
Algerian fans might be unhappy at the moment but for the Equatorial Guinean fans, this win is a great achievement since it is against one of the finest football nations on the African content.
